Holden: side with or stand aside???

Now that we have finished reading the novel, it is your chance to take some time and start making ends meet as to what the book is about, its meanings and conflicts.
You should try to uncover what this story represents FOR YOU and maybe find some useful hint as to how Holden's experience of growth can become an enlightening experience for your own life.
Here are some guiding questions that can help you explore some issues related to both Holden's life and your own:

- When we read Holden's story we learn about the conflicts of a teenager your age, what points do you find... surprising? familiar? unbearable? impossible to believe?
- Do you, at any time, feel... pity? contempt? mercy? When?
- Do you know any person who has undergone such situation as Holden does in the book?
- What advice would you give him, if he was your friend/classmate?
- When Mr Antolini tells him this quote, do you truly understand it? How would you make it your own motto?

"The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one" by Wilhelm Stekel.

I think that Holden would be a tipical teenager if he changes a little his pessimistic and cinical mind. He have a peculiar way to see life and also to think about the people that live diary with him. Despiting this, he suffered the normal problems that every teenager may have but he complicates a little bit his life, maybe if he stopped thinking sooo much in simple things, he would be happier.
On the one hand, in some parts of the book I felt pity for him because he didn't have anyone to talk with, he never had the support of his family and even worth he never had comunication with them; while on the other hand it was totally understandable all the things he did to call other people's attention.
As a conclussion, I would advice him to live his life more relaxed and not to complicate too much little things, and also It would be a good idea to change his perspective to adults and life.

While reading The Catcher on the rye, the first thing that calls my atention is how Holden is isolated in many aspects from the rest students of his age. He questions about unusual thing for a teenager and critizises every single person of being "phonies". Holden is afraid of growing up and this maybe the reason why he hates adult people, and tryes to overprotect children not to loose their inonese, which means in real life to grow up.
Personaly I think everywhere we can find someone as Holden, different from the rest, that quiestion others and are always aparted from the mass. I think this can have positive and negative aspects, because it is good to be yourself and not dot hings only because others do it, buy always trying to "respect" the age you have and the time of your life you are living.
If a were Holden¨s frien I would advice him to try to have friends, so what teenagers do and accept tat some day everybody will be more mature and think and live different situations. Holden should realice this is normal ans weather you like it or not will happen the same!

It was a good book. At the begining I dind't like it, I had some problems to understand it, I realy hated it. But as we went on reading, I started to understan it, and at last, I liked it very much.
Holden in a litle exagerated way, represents us. Becouse he is a teenager. He is fisicaly big, meaning a big person, but he has some problems to fix. His inmatuarness is a real problem to him. He doesn't want to grow up. Is like many times we don't want to let the time pass, We want to stop the time, and stay forever as we are in that moment. I would can say than some times we are afraid to grow up. I think many times holden represents us. For example, when he talks with the cab driver, about the ducks. Is like he feels no one is with him, protecting him, he feels alone in the hole world, and that is what we feel many times.
So that's way I liked the book. I think is a book that can make us reflexionate (reflexionar, I don't know how to spell it jaja) a lot so that we can grow up and leave our teenage.

I think it was a good book, buy I didn't like it so much because it prevails the protagonist's thoughts over the story, what I'm trying to say is that most part of the book are just holden's thoughts towards people, things etc.
